Access to High School Campus Limited... Alternate Route Suggestions

Travel Advisory to access the High School driveway... The NDOR will be resurfacing the access road from Highway 1 to the High School Driveway entrance from today, July 18 through July 25, 2018. There will be access to the driveway from the gravel road (south of the driveway) on 42nd street.

There's 2 possible routes to the 42nd street gravel road; see highlighted map within this message.

We're appreciative of Cass County for resurfacing this small, but highly-used road into our high school campus. With improvements, sometimes we have to endure the time and inconvience during the process. We hope your summer is going well... it's just a short time before we're back in the school route. Thank you for your patience!

2018 07 04 CROWS NEST

A big WELCOME to new owners, Spencer and Natalie Vampola, who opened the doors for customers to their new business, the

CROW'S NEST,

on July 2, 2018!

Located at the the former home of the Firehouse Bar and Grill, 104 E Main Street, Murray, NE, the kitchen will be open

Monday thru Saturday, 11 am - 8 pm

Friday and Saturday, 11 am - 9 pm.

Closed Sundays.

The menu will be limited for a short time, but we can testify that the chicken sandwich, cheeseburger and fries were great!

Keno will be coming, too, as soon as all the necessary red tape is completed and approved by the State.

It's always great when new business comes to our small towns and villages. Remember that they can only survive when they're patronized. We hope that when you stop in to welcome Spencer and Natalie to Murray that you'll wish them luck in their new venture.

Congratulations to all the current and former Old Avoca Schoolhouse Music Students who participated in the 20th Annual Tallgrass Prairie Fiddle Festival at the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice! They were all terrific, in spite of the extreme heat.

Bryan, Lilli, Dottie, and Ethne attended the free fiddle workshop in the morning, and Bryan also participated in the free harmonica workshop.

Caleb, Maddyn, Sophie, Taylor and Lilli shared some of their best performances in the Junior Division (for fiddlers who have been playing 5 years or less.

Lilli won the “Oldest Fiddler” award. (She is the youngest fiddler to win the Oldest Fiddler award.)

In the Senior Division (for fiddlers who have been playing 5 years or more), Cari-lynn won 3rd Place, Grace won 2nd Place, and Mindy won 1st Place.

Grace won the free fiddle/bow/case!

Next year’s event is on Saturday, May 25, 1919!

Championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt will be sharing the music of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland during the Scandinavian Fiddle Camp, Wednesday, August 1 - Friday, August 3, 2018, 9 AM - Noon, in The Old Avoca Schoolhouse, Avoca, Nebraska.

On Wednesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation. We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords. You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.

On Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets. Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of the day, just in case your ears need the help.

On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.

Enrollment limited to 10 fiddlers.

Recipe of the week...

90-Second Keto Bread

Makes 1 mini loaf

1 large egg
1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon coconut flour
1 tablespoon almond or hazelnut flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch salt

Optional add-ins:
1/4 cup grated cheese
1 tablespoon minced scallions or herbs

Whisk the egg, milk, oil, coconut flour, nut flour, baking powder, and salt together in a small bowl. Add the cheese and scallions or herbs, if using, and stir to combine.

Pour into a tall microwave-safe mug and tap the bottom firmly on the counter a few times to force any air bubbles to rise and pop. Microwave on high for 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Invert mug onto a cutting board and let the bread slide out. Cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices. To toast, heat a teaspoon of oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the slices and toast until golden-brown, about 30 seconds per side.
